This article by Nigel extracted from http://nigelais.blogspot.com/2010/01/mas-saya-nak-cuti-bloggers-night-out.html
Yes, it's that time of the year again where everyone is busy planning on when to take leave for holidays. Apparently, with Chinese New Year just around the corner - you could apply for leave that allows you a 2-week off. Whatever it is, I bet most of us would love to travel given the opportunity.
And one way you could get that opportunity is through Malaysia Airlines' latest contest/reality-TV program called 'Saya Nak Cuti!' (I Want To Go On A Holiday!).

Fulfill your dream holiday with Malaysia Airlines.
Held at Brisik Restaurant, Jaya One - the social session brought together key bloggers from all around the blogsphere to mingle and learn more about the program. This brought back memories of good times me and the usuals had last year while celebrating a birthday there.

Spot an all-rounder orange restaurant and you spot Brisik.

Of speech bubbles and holiday destinations. Yes, I want to go to Bangkok.
After about an hour's wait - the session began with the customary explanation of the overall program and night activities. If you're interested, all you have to do is to write about your dream holiday destination (ASEAN countries only), get shortlisted, get votes, be in the Top 12 and you're on your way there complete with a TV camera crew to film your footsteps and air it on Astro Ria channel sometime in the future. See here for more details.

Then, there was a 'Be A Host' session where the best impersonation wins a trip abroad.

All that with some good food and company, of course.

Met a couple of familiar faces I haven't seen in a while. Can't believe I'm bigger than Jason.
Guess who won the best travel host impersonation? (Now where's that video..hmm)

Haha, congrats dude. Hope you get to go to Phuket soon.
I've been to Phuket too many times already. Kinda got bored with that place. But listen not to me and go scribble some over at mastraveller.com today. You might just get to escape this country for a while, while making your television debut at the same time. Who knows, you might even win a Golden Globe while you're at it. |

In just a few weeks, www.mastraveller.com will become the most heard of, talked and raved about micro site ever to enter the virtual world. Says who? Says ME! who is very much part of the MAS Traveller Micro site development team.
Being on the team has opened my eyes to a whole new world, a discovery beyond belief of a virtual existence which I could never have imagined being part of.
Words like widget, IP registered users, CI files, FTP, metatags, SEM, DNS, NS, media sharing engine, blog RSS and site administrator were all so unfamiliar back when I was still a newbie on the team. Groping with the idea that I have to understand all these jargons in a matter of weeks to be able to provide maximum support to the rest on the team, who are no novices to the digital sphere, was quite challenging at first. It also took me a few days to understand how this site will serve the public let alone be independent of its own content when it kicks-off with ‘live’ feed of TV programmes like `Destinasi Bajet’, `Go Travel’ (all on 8TV), and personal blogs with a home-video feel, over and on top of it being linked to our corporate website.
Months went by and from having sat in weekly progress meetings, I began to realise as I signed on as a registered user and checking out other sites for research purposes, that www.mastraveller.com is a domain that makes it easy for our customers to not only choose and purchase tickets to their dream destinations but also gain information on what to do once they are there. He or she is bound to discover an EXPERIENCE and MORE, by a traveller for a traveller on www.mastraveller.com.
Aside the usual top10 insider’s tips of an interesting location, showcasing the unique local culture, restaurants/stalls that only locals go to and local activities unknown to tourists, and not forgetting, interesting accommodation, www.mastraveller.com gives internet users/travelers REAL stories, REAL info and REAL insights on destinations and places of interest. What more could a REAL traveler ask for?
Now, that’s what’s unique about the site. It bbecomes a travel enabler; helping travelers Choose, Buy and Go NOW! Most sites I know or heard of do not ‘feed’ travelers with what they can do when they arrive at a particular destination/place. More often than not, travelers are `milking’ for must do’s from several sites, for travel-related information, before they can even move onto the next level – purchase a ticket. Some may get too much of everything and anything, while others get a few bits and pieces (unwholesome info) here and there for the better part of their `quick-search’ on the virtual front. There’s hardly a one-stop ‘funnel’ for all-you-can-get-DIY holiday.
One thing I’ve learnt from working on the project is that there is NO such thing as information overload for the public when it comes to travel-related content of the digital sense. Everything you see, read and get from www.mastraveller.com is wholesome, rich, highly interactive, aggressive and interesting, and not just mere spurts of the usual-usual. Most importantly, it incentivizes others to share common, interesting & purely real and not make-belief insights from an everyday YOU & ME!
It was definitely a self-revelation for me having teamed up with colleagues and partners to give others a useful channel/medium which will serve as a guide to travellers flying on Malaysia Airlines. It makes my task, working alongside the wordsmith assigned to churn content for the micro site, sound exceptionally small and beneath notice.
A little background: www.mastraveller.com is aimed at those between the ages of18-40 year old, who are more prone to getting information off the web and inclined to being fed with a more balanced content; a toss between the more obvious and the more off-the-beaten, trail-blazing single-liners (by season, theme, celebration, and MAS promos etc). So, before OTHERS beat you to it and start hogging your space on the public domain known as www.mastraveller.com, check-it out, ‘bookmark’ and make it your permanent ‘favourite’. |

Alas, my virgin visit to Jaya One. Thanks to Malaysia Airlines, I finally has a reason to come to Jaya One lol. This time the dinner gathering is at Brisik. We were all asked to dress to the theme of ASEAN destination that we wanted to visit. The best dress can win a pair of air ticket to any ASEAN destination of his/her choice. Most of us choose the beach theme, one of the easiest to do mah.

Some are not interested for the best dress.

Wingz, where is Barley?
I like MAS dinner gathering, not too crowded and can meet up some blogger friends. Food is always good too.

With Nigel & Kel Li. We all want beaches. Thanks Nigel for the pic.
Jason came all the way from Malacca and then go all the way back after the dinner. Gung ho.

With Jason Mumbles and Joshua "The Innit King" Ong
My foodies gang was there too.

KampungBoy and Chris
2 couples and 2 singles. Such a match lol.

CityGal, Christine and Ai Wei
Some dressed in Eastern Asian style.

Alicia in her Yukata
Okay. Move on the the presentation. MAS and Astro collaborated to make a reality traveling show. How is it going to be reality? No, it's not Amazing Race kind of reality. This one is to have normal folks like you and me to be their own vacation show host. You've watched a lot of show and see how the host get to have fun eating, traveling, and shopping in a foreign country with all expenses paid. Now you can be at that position too with MAS Saya Nak Cuti contest.
Follow the three simple steps below and you can get a chance to become your own travelling show host.

1. Tell about your dream vacation at www.mastraveller.com.
2. If your story is shortlisted, then make sure you get people to vote for you so that you can be one of the 12 finalists.
3. If you're one of the 12 finalists, you'll be going to host your own traveling show.
Faster, submission closed at 11.59 p.m. 31st January 2010. Click here to participate now.
The bloggers that night also get a chance to win trips to ASEAN country. Besides the Best Dress contest, there's another contest Battle of the Dream Destinations, one need to sell your dream destination in a creative way like one is hosting a traveling show on video. I participated in the latter because I knew I won't win the best dress once I saw RedMummy.
I introduced Bali ala Peter Chou minus the vulgarity lol.

While Thomas Yap introduced Maldives like a tour guide.

Shaz has got the most cast in his hosting.

Shaz getting his sensitive nerve point poked by Jessica.
The judges from MAS and Fleishman took 15 minutes to discuss who are the winner for both contest.
The winner of the Best Dress goes to....

Obviously goes to RedMummy. Look at the traditional Thai dancer costume.
Winner of the hosting contest goes to...
Peter Chao Simon Seow. Yes, that's me. My prize a bit different from RedMummy. Mine is a single all expense paid trip to an ASEAN country chose by MAS. I will be following one of the 12 finalist to the shooting of the traveling show. So, I get to see behind the scene of the production of a travelling show.

Jamie was there too. Aaron came quite late and of course David and Hsu Jen were there.
Oh, and the food from Brisik is not too bad. I like the Sate Serai (lemongrass satay). The food is ASEAN themed too.

Saya Nak Cuti! |

By: The Living MH Blog Team

We get quite a bit of feedback regarding our fares, and how we have promos that are counter-intuitive: That tickets purchased earlier are more expensive than if purchased later.
Let me provide an explanation to this business practice.
Airlines, at its essence, are selling services that have expiration dates.
In the airline industry, scheduled flights and planes are committed to take off at the published dates and times. The seats need to be filled for the aircraft to operate optimally. If the seats are empty at take-off, they have “expired” and cannot be re-sold, and the cost of operating that particular flight and seat cannot be recovered.

Just like with retail, airlines regularly have sales and promotions for seats on upcoming flights. And, just like with retail there are seasons of high and low peaks, and trends- Christmas sales, school holidays, summer holidays, etc.
Given the current economic and industry climate, airlines have had to adopt new approaches to their pricing models and campaigns. These are essential for survival- more and more airlines are declaring losses and going bankrupt. These pricing campaigns are aimed at filling the seats of scheduled flights.
However, as the date of the flights draw near, and when airlines realize that there are still seats left unsold, just like with retail, airlines will need to push these sales urgently, to at least recuperate the costs associated with the seats (and flying the aircraft) with much reduced emphasis on profit.
In MAS we refer to this as Dynamic Pricing. Understandably any business will want to optimize its earnings based on market demand. When demand is higher such as during peak seasons, companies will price its products to optimize its income. Similarly when demand is low, companies will price its products more attractively, no longer aiming to maximize profit but to recover the costs of operation.
Taking into consideration that there are 18 fare classes in every flight (an airline industry norm), over 60 points of sale, operating 114 routes everyday, 7 days a week, 3 industry calendar seasons, Malaysia Airlines has over 2.5 million fare permutations on its pricing “watch list”. Malaysia Airlines are actually monitoring its sales down to the per-seat level basis- given this climate it cannot afford to only monitor sales at per-flight levels anymore.
As such, given that flights can be purchased from anywhere in the world over online or offline channels and at different dates or seasons, passengers on the same flight are very likely to have paid very different fares for the same flight. Moreover, passengers who purchased at different dates are likely to have paid different fares for the same flight too. Given their knowledge of airlines’ dynamic pricing practice, during the current economic downturn some passengers may actually risk opting for the chance that flights are still not full yet as the date draws near, to capitalize on the further-reduced, “last minute” promotions.
I tell my friends this when they complain to me: “Do you bring your recent purchase back to the departmental store asking for a refund/difference when they go on the Malaysian Mega Sales?” Admittedly the airline has had to adapt to the current industry trend, and while folks are already familiar with this practice in retail, times are changing and we need to adapt too.
I hope this explanation sheds some light on how we price fares. To reiterate, this has become necessary as a means to survive in the current climate and also the regional and global airline industry landscape. Today’s press has already reported that our pricing strategies has somewhat improved our load factors for June and July.
Our website is now peppered with fare promotions like “Get-the-Deal”, and these do change very quickly based on the “watch list” mentioned above, by the Network Revenue dept which sets fares that are immediately reflected on the website.
We do appreciate your continuous support, as we continue to be innovative with our business strategies (heard about our ASEAN PASS?) as well as our service offerings- hope you get to try our Tun Razak menu J |

This article by Kenny Sia (Friends of MH) extracted from http://www.kennysia.com/archives/2009/05/adv-airlines-al.php
Actual title of the article of Kenny Sia's story ADV: Airlines Also Got Stimulus Package
I just signed up for the 21km category of this year’s KL International Marathon.

This time round, I plan to give myself a treat and splurge a little bit.
My body is gonna be very sore after doing the half-marathon, so I thought about upgrading myself to business class on the return journey. My tired legs would certainly appreciate the extra leg space.

So I went online to check their business class fare prices, thinking if the difference is not too much then it might be worth the experience.
And then I noticed something a little different on the MAS website.
What is this "Economy +" thing on their website?!

How come I never see or hear it before one? When did that come about?
Apparently, it’s the same as Business Class, but at a lower price.
On Economy+, the trip from KL back to Kuching costs RM635 and includes priority boarding, access to the Golden Lounge, Business Class seats and royal treatment by slightly better-looking MAS air stewardesses.

Hmmm... tempting.
Of course, logic took over and the prude in me screamed, “Oi! You haven’t even made it in life yet. Who are you to fly Business?”
I promptly settled myself for normal cattle class instead.
As it turns out on economy class the fare is even cheaper. I booked their Balik Kampung weekend fare, and the one-way flight is just RM130 all-inclusive.

I have been flying Malaysia Airlines a lot more often since they’ve slashed their prices low during the start of the financial crisis. Even in times of crisis, people still need to fly. That’s why they called it the MAS Stimulus Package.
Economy+ and Balik Kampung mentioned earlier are two of the nine different deals introduced by MAS to stimulate the economy.
Giving the economy a bit of tickle on the belly, if you will.

There are other specials, of course.
MHFlex 1+1 is buy one full price economy tix, get one free. Kids Fly Free is buy two adult economy tix, get one child tix free. Both are available for bookings made in person.

There’s something for those belonging to the upper echelon of society.
Business Companion is buying one full price business tix, get another one at 50% off. Premium Match is getting the same price flying MAS first or business class, if another similar class tickets were booked on another airline before.

There’s something for bargain hunters as well.
80% Off Domestic & ASEAN and Weekend Getaway are special low fare deals for all bookings made over the Internet that could make flying by MAS worth the extra premium.
Surely that’s gonna stimulate anyone’s package.

All in all, there is something in their bag of tricks for everyone.
Everyone’s packages are stimulated. No one is left out.
Of course, some paranoid people might say, “But Kenny, what about swine flu!?”
What is so scary about swine flu? Not that many countries are affected. Besides, it’s not like pigs could fly.

If you got a blog, start feeling lucky. You can join their Facebook competition. 9 prizes are up for grabs and the top prize is a Business Class seat to Sydney or Tokyo.
I recognized a problem though.
The MAS Stimulus Package is so freaking gigantic that it is actually confusing me a lot. That’s what happens when you got a promotion that’s targeted towards everybody.

But before I could err... stimulate my own package in frustration, I was introduced to the Grab-A-Deal website where all these are made sense of.

This website is awesome. It scouts ahead and publishes the lowest MAS fare for all domestic and international flights. From time to time, there are “hidden gems” waiting to be discovered.
Like £96 (RM 509) from London to KL.

Ridiculous. At such a price, even Harry Potter would not be using his broom to fly.
Yeah, Harry Potter. That’s what he said when I met him. He told me that himself when I bumped into him in the UK.
True story.

See? I ain’t lying! |

- While waiting for the crowd, me standing at the back -
“I woke up in the morning looking forward to re-experience the usual massive barge of the crowd into a travel fair. Well, that didn’t happen as what I’ve imagined. Consumers rather sit at home at get their travel packages coming to them……nevertheless; the feeling of being in a travel fair is one that is mind blowing. I never fail to feel more and more excited as day’s draws close to a travel fair, 2004 being the first one I’ve attended in Mines Resort. When I got into the fair venue, it took me a while to realize that this is Matta Fair & NOT Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair. The whole of Hall 1 & 2 was practically dressed in MH colors, MH standees, MH banners etc. This pride grew in me and I immediately tagged on my MH staff ID next to my Matta Fair pass.

As per the crowd, the first day was a bit slow, as it was raining heavily in the morning and the mass are still recovering from the worries of the recent flood which occurred in the same area; same hall to be specific. The crowd picked up after 2pm. I went for lunch seeing the hall reasonably lean & upon coming back….BOOM! I thought I was at the wrong fair…….well, I then realized that I am at Matta Fair.

Eyes were rolling; people were walking & talking, some even screaming……really. I never knew people get THAT joyous upon purchasing their first honeymoon package. Deals were great all around from various agents; imagine you could travel to Phuket for RM250, to Hong Kong for RM350 & to Australia for RM450. The packages were awesome that I got myself a package to Phuket even though I just traveled there early last month. The 2nd day of the fair was even crazy, with it not being a working day and all that, the crowd kept pouring into PWTC. There were even Australian glass-blowing demonstration, Middle East ice-cream offerings & time-sharing hotel deals. I would love to say that the crowd cooled of at a certain time, but I would be lying.

Well, despite the so called drop in travelling demand, Malaysia Airlines managed to achieve triple growth revenue as compared to last years Matta results. I finally had some peace of mind after clearing up our booth at the end of fair on the 3rd day. Phew……till the next Matta Fair in September 2009! “

As year 2008 is drawing to an end, we have organised a get-together lunch at our town office on Friday, 26 December as the last Juara activity for this year.
Since it is a festive holiday, some staff are taking leave and the get-together lunch has been a bit quiet but we tried to arrange it so most staff could spend some time together before long holidays. This was also a casual celebration after a tough time during the Bangkok airport crisis.

As usual , each department brought some food to share and helped to do some decorations to create a cheerful festive mood. We have taken some photos and wanted to share with you.

By: Kusoom Dahlan (Malaysia Airlines, Bangkok)
The “MH DAY” on 26 Nov shall be a day to remember for all MAS staff in Thailand as it coincides with an incident that has become a page in Thailand’s history (or perhaps MAS history also!) when the Bangkok International airport, Suvarnabhumi was seized by a crowd of about 30,000 protestors on the night of 25 Nov.

From 26Nov to 03Dec, Bangkok International Airport was completely closed and we had to cancel all flights in and out on 26Nov and 27Nov. The 1st rescue flight was brought in on 28Nov to carry our backlog passengers out of a military airport some 180km away from Bangkok town. From 29Nov to 04Dec, we continued to operate from this airport and could assist to cater more than 200 passengers each day.
During the crisis, BKK and HKT teams coordinated in accommodating our passengers on schedule and extra flights from HKT as well. We also authorized those who preferred to take flights from PEN or AOR using BKK/KUL tickets. Those who would take other means of transport, either by coach or train to south Thailand or cross the border to Malaysia were allowed to refund their BKK/KUL tickets without penalty. Every effort had been made to ensure our stranded passengers were able to make their journey to KUL as early as possible.

Staff from various departments spontaneously rose to the occasion both at BKK and HKT offices. Reservations staff teamed up with Sales staff to handle incoming calls that came in non-stop during the first 3-4 days. All staff was required to work from 0800-2100hrs until situation was back to normal. This included Saturday and Sunday.
Accounts staff that normally work at the back room and rarely are in contact directly with passengers had also played a part. Despite their lack of skills in English and little knowledge in reservations/ticketing, they tried to communicate with customers and assisted in getting details from them for flight reservations and passed it on to reservations staff to action accordingly. At BKK Town Office (BKKTO), they helped to organize a queue system at Ticket counter since we were receiving 100-200 passengers per day from 28Nov to 30Nov. Our Accounting Manager who has just joined MAS 2 months ago was helping out at U-Tapao airport together with Accounts officer to guide our passengers to check-in counter and render necessary assistance while waiting for check-in.
Our ticketing staff could hardly take a break. They didn’t even have time to take any meals or drink until all passengers cleared from counter. That was after 7 pm.
As for airport staff, both at BKK and HKT, this was the toughest time for them. Due to poor check-in system and limited facility at U-Tapao Airport, everything had to be done manually. Thus took longer time and flights during first 2 days had been delayed for 4-5 hours. Staff had to stay back late at night and could barely get any rest. However, airport staff at both stations has received a lot of compliments from our passengers, especially Malaysians, for their helpfulness and professionalism in handling the situation. Letters and e-mails of appreciation from our customers that have been sent directly to our MD can say it best.

Our Area Manager and Station Manager had performed the “Turun Padang” by positioning themselves at U-Tapao during those 6-7 days with all airport staff to ensure smooth operation and customers’ comfort. Our Area Manager even struggled through the crowd, held out the signage with MH flight no. and called out our passengers who scattered around the terminal to come forward and proceed to check-in counter as the airport was so congested and no proper signage.
HKT airport led by our MH Juara, Ms. Jongrak and her team also dedicated themselves and made every effort to accommodate our passengers via HKT. Her great job during the crisis was also appreciated by our Malaysian passenger and appeared in Malaysian newspaper as well.
Through the crisis, staff have shown their true spirit of “MH” and have proven that “united we stand”.
We will keep it up and even better. |

No problem. Just trying my luck.
Since you are going to post my feedback, probably I just write about my pleasant trip to Jakarta by MAS recently.
We went to Jakarta last school holiday. There were 10 of us in the family. My father in law, mother in law, sister and brother, nieces and nephews. In my own family, there were my wife, 2 kids and me.
Although we are traveling with large family and small baby, the trip was really pleasant. The stewardess is very kind and friendly in accommodating to our needs.
There is a lot of things money can buy, but not the kindness and honesty of a person. Cheaper is not necessary good. What we want is value for money.
Just an opinion : I travel with MAS a lot of times. For me, MAS is a Malaysiam Ambassador to the world. I do hope that all areas of MAS Management, Operations and Services are appreciating everyday.
MAS should be more flexible to tackle all issues from making the National Carrier depreciating it's values.
Keep up the good work!!!! |

Do you know?
Many of you may not be aware of the existence of the Service Recovery Team at our Hub in KUL. We can take pride in saying that we are one of the few airlines that actually have a dedicated team to handle recovery service.
The Service Recovery Unit consists of 34 personnel who have been trained to endure a very high level of pressure. In general, we meet passengers when they are fuming with anger. Frankly our job is to retransform ‘the Hulk’ back into Dr Bruce Banner.
The core function of this unit is to handle delays from major ones to expedite transfers from aircraft to aircraft and ensure that all guests are well taken care of and though they experience the inconvenience of being delayed, they are pampered with personalized service that is rich in Malaysian Hospitality. I must admit that our job is a difficult one but if you love to empathize with and care for people, it is really very wonderful. It is a very nice feeling in so many ways when a delayed flight is leaving. First, you feel happy and satisfied that you were able to touch so many people’s lives. Secondly, you feel proud that through your actions people relate to Malaysia Airlines in a positive way.
So the next time you are out of Kuala Lumpur and experience a delay look out for the service recovery personnel and feel assured that you are in safe hands.
Lately, we handled a group of paxs from Manila with a separate connection on another airline. Due to an unavoidable delay on the inbound flight, they missed their connection. We had to go all out to negotiate their connection and secure accommodation, At first they were upset but when they left they were truly happy with the service we provided. Personally, I really feel very satisfied when I am able to help people in need. This satisfaction is one of a kind….
More to come, signing of for now Raphael Michael

Welcome To Our Home
As the host of IATA AGM 2009, we (MAS) had an opportunity to showcase the beautiful sights and sounds of Malaysia during the official closing ceremony of IATA AGM 2008 held recently in Istanbul. To leverage on this opportunity, a group of my colleagues and I set out to produce an MAS Malaysia destination video entitled 'Welcome To Our Home'.
With a very tight budget and timeline, we had to work quick and wise whilst maintaining the quality of the MH brand.
I found that the hardest challenge was to select as much of our existing footages (shot for previous videos, TV commercials etc) as possible to ensure minimal filming (cost containment) but at the same time, making sure that it fits the approved storyboard.
In less then 2 months, 'Welcome To Our Home' was produced and the beauty of Malaysia that is filled with diverse ethnicity, colours and experience was presented by our Managing Director, Dato' Sri Idris Jala at the 64th AGM held in June 2008.
I was really pleased to find out that we received a standing ovation from the 900 airlines and aviation delegates who attended this meeting. All the hard work did not go in vain. It was worth every effort and challenges. Now back to the drawing board!
Our many thanks to Tourism Malaysia for allowing us to use existing footages on Malaysia as well the signature One Golden Celebration and Malaysia Truly Asia songs as part of this video. |
